This is a Thursday series in which I pause and acknowledge something big and important or something small and insignificant that has made me thankful. It is so important and incredibly refreshing to look at the positivity around us, when we are so often surrounded by negativity. I haven't written much about it on here, but I have three big personal goals for 2013. One is to beat my time from last year's mini-triathlon, and another goal is to finally beat my 5K time. I ... don't remember what the other goal was, which is maybe a bad sign... I'll get back to you on that.
My standing PR for a 5K is from my senior year of high school. My goal was to finish in under 30 minutes. On the day of the race, I was ready. I approached the finish line, saw the clock said something like 29 minutes, and I sprinted. I didn't see the clock when I crossed the finish line, but I felt good! And fast! Until the results came out later that month... and I saw my official race time:
I was 2 tenths of a second over my goal time. And I've never let it go.
So this year, I'm going to kick that time in the butt. I am still not a huge fan of running, but I've been very thankful for my Nike Running app that I have on my phone. It tells me how far I've gone, what my pace is, and I can hit "Power Song" which suddenly blasts a classic tune to motivate me. But my favorite part of the app is that it syncs with facebook, and when someone "likes" the post, the app starts cheering for me! And no joke, hearing the sudden applause always makes my heart soar, and suddenly I can run a little faster. It's the little things, right?
As you can see, I'm not there yet -- but my pace is getting faster, my distances are getting longer, and I'm loving waving at my imaginary fans every time the app begins applauding my efforts!
