Behind the Scenes: How we practice taking up space in the Empowerment Studio -- with Kythera

Hello loves! (Studio Gremlin David here) Something we love about doing boudoir in the Empowerment Studio is that it’s a place where you get to practice taking up space, specifically asking for what you want and need. Our friend Kythera was in the studio this last fall, and, well, I’ll let her tell you how it went:

“Everyone likes to talk about how amazing it is to work with Kinzie and everyone in the Empowerment Studio, and it's all true! The positivity, the encouragement, the feeling of being in a safe space.

But here's what really makes that space feel REALLY GOOD: The freedom and the power to say "no." Without guilt, without any strings attached, just pure acceptance.

Some examples:

Hair and makeup:

My idea of "hair and makeup" is wool roving, spirit gum, fang veneers, special effect contact lenses, and monster makeup. I had NO idea what I was getting into with the makeup artist, so I was nervous. And to be 100% honest? It [was] just NOT right at first. The hair had a little too much volume, and the makeup was a little too soft in ways that skewed my whole look way more feminine than I felt comfortable with. I didn't want to say anything at first because I didn't want to insult the makeup artist, but they knew. And told me it was okay if this wasn't right, because we could make adjustments until it WAS right. So I said it wasn't right. Adjustments were made. And then they NAILED IT.

Posing:

"I like the idea of that position, but I don't think my back can do that for more than a few seconds." I'm paraphrasing, but that was something we encountered during my session. The idea for the pose was GREAT, but my lower back just wasn't up to holding the pose. Without missing a beat, Kinzie found some posing props to support me while I did the pose and we got some GREAT shots out of it.

Kythera also said: “That's one of the most profound things I took away from the session. Knowing that I don't have to ‘settle’ for something that's not right. That I can ask for adjustments or changes. Ask for it beyond the session. Take up space, don't settle for something that doesn't work when you know there are options. You're worth advocating for.”

You ARE worth advocating for, and we want to do it with you! Our brand new Empowerment Experience is open NOW and we’d love to have you. If you want to work with the Empowerment Studio and have a container of space where you get to stretch and grow — maybe this is your moment!
